Wooden furniture brings a special sense of warmth, character, and natural beauty to our homes. Whether it is an antique dining table passed down through generations or a newly purchased bed with a modern design, proper care is essential to keep wooden surfaces looking as beautiful as they did on the first day.

High-quality wooden furniture is a long-term investment, and preserving its beauty is actually easier than it may seem. In this article, we share professional care tips that will extend the life of your wooden furniture and help you clean it safely without causing damage.

i. Daily cleaning and dusting

Regular dusting is the most important step in caring for wooden furniture. Dust and dirt that collect on the surface can cause microscopic scratches over time. Always use a soft, dry, lint-free microfibre cloth or a special soft brush when cleaning your furniture.

Regular dusting removes harmful particles from the protective layer of the wood and helps preserve its natural shine.

ii. Deep cleaning: what should you avoid?

When your furniture requires deeper cleaning, you should avoid harsh chemical products. Because wood is susceptible to fading and damage, cleaning products containing ammonia must not be used, as ammonia can seriously damage both the structure of the wood and its lacquered finish.

Instead, you may use a mixture of mild dishwashing liquid and warm water. However, be careful: lightly dampen the cloth and immediately dry the surface completely with another clean, dry cloth after wiping it. Water left on wooden surfaces may be absorbed by the material, causing swelling, stains, and water rings.

Atelier rule

Always clean wooden surfaces in the direction of the wood’s natural grain.

iii. Natural stain removal and polishing

White water marks left by glasses or cups are among the most common problems faced by owners of wooden furniture. To remove them, prepare a mixture of white toothpaste and baking soda with a small amount of water, then gently rub it onto the surface in the direction of the wood grain. This is an effective and natural solution.

After cleaning your furniture, polishing is important to restore its lost shine. However, avoid polishes with a high alcohol content, as alcohol can damage the wood’s protective finish.

Recommended

  • A lint-free microfibre cloth
  • Warm water and mild dishwashing liquid
  • Toothpaste and baking soda for white marks
  • A safe furniture polish
  • Cleaning in the direction of the wood grain

Avoid completely

  • Cleaning products containing ammonia
  • Alcohol-based polishes
  • Silicone or heavy wax-based polishes
  • Leaving moisture on the surface
  • Harsh chemical products

Silicone or heavy wax-based polishes are also not recommended, as they can create a sticky layer that attracts dirt over time. You can protect the wood from external damage by using safe and suitable furniture polishes.

iv. Protection from climate, heat, and sunlight

As wood is a natural material, it is highly sensitive to changes in the environment, temperature, and climate. Maintaining stable humidity and temperature levels in your home directly extends the life of your furniture.

Sudden temperature changes affect the moisture level in a room. Extremely dry air can cause wood to dry out, shrink, become brittle, and crack, while excessively humid air can cause it to swell. For this reason, avoid placing wooden furniture in areas with high levels of steam, such as bathrooms.

Protecting your furniture from strong direct sunlight is also very important. Use curtains or blinds to limit sun exposure. Otherwise, ultraviolet rays may cause the wood to fade unevenly and dry out the surface.

Simple rule

During winter, keep wooden furniture at least 30 centimetres away from radiators and other heat sources.

v. Everyday protection habits

To prevent scratches and heat marks during everyday use, always place coasters and trivets under hot pots and damp tea or coffee cups. This simple habit helps prevent both structural heat damage and difficult-to-remove water rings.

By following these simple yet effective care tips, you can preserve both the beautiful appearance and functionality of the elegant, high-quality wooden furniture you choose from Perla Mebel for generations.
